Motivation What is it, where do we get it, how should we apply it? These are three questions that can be asked of motivation. Motivation to me is the inducement to undertake something that is going to have a positive outcome. I am motivated by my work, I desire to heal, help and empower and therefore my motivation is to achieve all of those things for both myself and other people. My family motivate me, I look at them and feel that I want to achieve things because they inspire me and I wish for them to feel proud of me and know that I am walking my talk. I am motivated to achieve spiritual fulfilment in my life. Personally I believe in reincarnation and karmic debt, so it is important for me to learn lessons from experiences that I have had in my life, experiences that have been both positive and negative, painful and joyful. How we go about motivating ourselves can of course be the hardest thing. If we have spent a great deal of our time struggling to achieve something and not succeeded or if we are always the underdog in our relationships it can be hard to find that motivation, especially if we feel ‘ What ’ s the point ? ’ Motivation has to come from within, it has to be about connecting with our higher selves and recognising that we all have the right to personal happiness, contentment and accomplishment in our lives. There are times when we have to remove ourselves from relationships or jobs that de-motivate us and make us less positive about our world. When we motivate others it is possible to find it within ourselves to seek improvement and focus and raise the bar for our own good. Whatever the point of stimulus is, how and when we apply it is important to the overall success of what we are trying to attain. If we are motivated to change our relationship it must be done in such a way that is right for us and not just right for the other party. Inspiration to change jobs or acquire new skills is of course dependent on the material aspects of our lives and what responsibilities we have. By retaining the initial motivation for change we can see even large projects through to a successful conclusion. Motivation is as key to overcoming discouraging experiences and overcoming setbacks( this the second attempt at adding a comment as I pressed the wrong button and lost all my first attempt at meditating on the subject!)Sometimes experience teaches us to keep our heads down ( like Seligman’s dogs and their ‘learned helplessness’- a technical term for behaviour at some point most people can understand whether we acknowledge it or no)Experiences teach us to refine our ‘theory of mind’ regarding interactions with the physical world(our own limitations ie much as we want to we cannot fly on our own, hence we learn not to jump off mountains)and our interactions with others ( that they have a different point of view and can experience other feelings)…Overcoming discouraging experiences requires trust and increasing confidence to accept that our own personal experiences can be rectified even if tardily and retrospectively…in engineering terms ‘learning’ is the ’signal’ amidst the ‘noise’ and chaos of life experiences generally( which we can progressively choose and select as we organise our own choice of experience depending on our intentions and attitudes).Cultural ideas( Richard Dawkins’ ‘memes’ are considered to be handed on from generation to generation, ie a Bonobo chimpanzee ‘teaching’ by example an offspring to use a twig to gather ants before eating them…all brains have neural structures that learn by imitation…(mirroring behaviour)…)
The faith that we can be healed( and therefor heal) is a meme,(nonetheless powerful for that) as is the hope (that springs eternal) that we can make amends for our learned helplessness but the greatest meme of all is the (4giving) love that we can trust others after we have had bad experiences and that with others encouragement we can overcome the discouragement and spiritual anergy of when ‘our get up go got up and went’.Overcoming the inertia of that experience can sometimes take a long time as experience tends to confirm what we already know in a seemingly unstoppable juggernaut of ineluctable. inexorable transition…yet with the resolute faith , hope and positive (4giving) love that encourages us to trust BEYOND OUR OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE it is possible…( Mahomet might come to the mountain but if we had enough faith we could move the mountain to Mahomet)….But is it worth it …who can say?
