define duplex, triplex and reciprocating pump?
Basically reciprocating pumps (ref. 1) use a piston and cylinder arrangement with valving to guide the flow of the pumped fluid into and out of the cylinder. The piston moves back and forth, i.e., reciprocally. Duplex and triplex are sub-classes of reciprocating pumps (although there may be non-reciprocating, e.g., centrifugal, versions as well). A triplex pump is a set of 3 pumps (ref. 2) and duplex a set of 2 pumps (ref. 1) operating from the same drive shaft. These multiple pumps may be connected to the drive shaft with offset cranks to provide the smoothest possible flow. E.g., in a duplex, one pump is on the delivery stroke when the other is on the intake stroke.
