Changes

I don’t mean the songs by Bowie or 2pac, or even, God help us, Kelly and Ozzy Osborne droning away together on a revolving throne. No, I’m talking about that weird thing that happens to us when we’re not looking. Without realising it, we change…

When I was a kid, I could never get over the sheer weirdness of getting taller. How could it have happened without me noticing it? I would look at my arms and wonder how come I had never felt the bones stretching. Sometimes the biggest changes happen quietly.

Somewhere in the studio gallery, there are pictures of most of the psychics on the show. Mine is about 3 years old – actually it’s the photo on my blog. The photographer managed to make me look like a psychotic alien (I don’t care how accurate a reflection you think it is, I still don’t think I look that way!) I’ve changed a lot since then… Am I the same person? In some ways I must be I suppose. I honestly don’t know.

We often view change with suspicion, because we want life to be based on constants, reliable factors that don’t shift. We don’t want our jobs to be up in the air, and when we marry we are making the most daunting promise of all: to be unchanging in love until we die. Does that really work?

We spend so much of our lives trying to nail down the unknown – in fact, this is the heart of a psychic’s work. Part of a psychic’s job is to help you find some power over your future. But don’t believe anyone who tells you that the universe shows them every twist and turn of your fate. If that was true you’d be reading your life, not living it and there would be no room for change or choice.

We can’t help changing. Sometimes it happens dramatically, with a huge event that transforms us, but more often it’s like growing up – we barely notice it at the time. The key lies in finding the way to enjoy it, whether that’s knowing when to move on, or understanding which choice leads to which consequence.

And that, of course, is what our show is all about. Tell me, what about you, how have you changed?
