Gravitational Potential Energy

Is gravitational potential energy a vector or scalar quantity and why?
I know energy is a scalar quantity but gravitational potential energy uses a reference point to determine the distance between 2 objects and can be negative or positive depending on its position relative to this reference point. This makes me think that gravitational potential energy is a vector.
Yes, it is a vector, it has magnitude and direction.
